Tips
Did you know if you are a New Zealand tax resident and have a UK pension, this pension has to be declared in a NZ tax return? Find out more handy tips below.
Look Through Property
New Zealanders can own a rental property in a corporate structure called a Look Through Company (LTC). Losses and Profits from an LTC are passed through to shareholders, meaning that losses can be used offset against personal income from other sources such as employment income.
Buying a Rental Property
When you buy a rental property you should structure your debt so that you have as much as possible geared towards the rental and as little as possible on your home to take advantage of interest deductibility.
UK Domicile Status
If you have lived in the UK for 17 of the last 20 years you will retain a deemed domicile status for 3 years after leaving the UK. This is an avoidance measure to stop people moving out of the UK to directly avoid Inheritance Tax.
Temporary Tax Exemption for NZ Migrants
There is a 4 year temporary tax exemption available to migrants moving to New Zealand which means that most forms of overseas income are kept out of the NZ tax net for 4 years. This does not include employment income from overseas employment performed while living in New Zealand or business income relating to services performed offshore.
Declaring UK Pensions in NZ
If you are tax resident in New Zealand and have a UK pension, this pension has to be declared in a NZ tax return, NOT a UK one. Use the HMRC Form Individual New Zealand to claim back tax deducted at source in the UK.
